I know I'm almost a week late, but I hope everybody had a great New Year's eve. I caught some kind of nasty bug last week, so have been out of commission. I tried to make the best of things, with lots of ginger tea and HBO series DVDs.
Any decent cooking was limited to New Year's Day, since I was determined to make some Hoppin' John. Growing up here in the frozen north, I didn't know about the southern tradition of eating black-eyed peas on Jan. 1. I'll let real southerners, or wikipedia, explain the reasons for this. I'm happy letting the calendar tell me to eat some black-eyed peas. Served here with quinoa and fried red kale and yellow sweet pepper.

Aww, sorry you caught a nasty bug! I hope you feel better soon!
I love your New Year's Day meal. We didn't have black eyed peas so I probably jinxed the whole year!
Try to stay warm!
Aw, glad to see you takin' on some Southern food traditions! Like a good Delta girl, I had mine too. But yours looks better. Quinoa is dreamy!
Glad your feeling better!
what a colorful plate! Glad you're better and happy new year!
yes great pic. Josh is amazing at what he does.
awww...shucks thanks for your nice comment:)
hope the pic "warms" ya! you seem to really need that:)
I just found your blog and I am going to try a few of your recipes. FYI: did you get an answer on your pipian question? There is a pumpkin type gourd called pipian from tuxpan. Apparently the seeds are used for a variety of Mexican desserts. Seeds are available in the US, but pretty rare.
i have been back tracking on all the wonderful food you have made....
it all looks so good and the pics rock...
hope you are feeling better...i seem to not be able to shake colds in the winter cold :)
happy new year...
Thanks for your nice comment, Mike! We've go to Theodore Roosevelt NP once a year and it's such a beautiful park. Most people flock to more popular parks like Yellowstone (which I also love), or the Grand Canyon, and they don't even know what they're missing at TRNP! The prairie dog towns are my favorite, we have so many prairie dog photos it's almost ridiculous! I can't control myself though, they are too cute!
How lucky you are to live in ND, even though you're probably covered in snow now! I hope you're feeling better!
Ginger tea is my friend these days too... Your black-eyed peas look great! I love them so much...
